Brand Experience Through Architectural Materiality
“When somebody goes into the shop, it’s to experience the brand culture, to really feel like they can live it and be part of it,” explains architect Julia Capp. The Hermès boutique at One Central Macau embodies this philosophy, where every element—from terracotta facade panels to ceramic rainscreen cladding—communicates timeless elegance and exclusivity
On Designing a Luxurious Experi…
The store’s 10-metre-high façade transitions from granite at the base into a relief of amber-hued enamelled terracotta bricks, arranged in staggered patterns to catch light from the adjacent water. This composition demonstrates how architectural terracotta becomes not just a material, but a storytelling medium.
Glazed Terracotta as a Defining Façade Element
The boutique’s façade is characterized by custom kiln-fired glazed terracotta bricks. Their amber finish interacts dynamically with natural light, shifting tone and intensity throughout the day. This transforms the building into a living surface, echoing the brand’s philosophy of craft and transformation.
Each piece of ceramic facade panels carries unique textures, but when assembled into a unified terracotta wall system, the composition reflects both artisanal irregularity and architectural precision. The warm amber tones project sophistication, aligning with Hermès’ refined identity.
Design Flexibility: Terracotta Shapes and Finishes
One of terracotta’s enduring strengths lies in its versatility. Designers can specify:
-
Terracotta cladding panels with matte, satin, or glossy glazed finishes
-
Terracotta fins and terracotta louvers to modulate daylight and create rhythm
-
Terracotta baguettes as sunscreen or ventilation elements within ceramic rainscreen cladding systems
-
Terracotta wall panels cladding integrated into terra cotta curtain wall assemblies for performance and longevity
At Macau, bespoke glazed bricks provide not only visual richness but also a tactile quality that enhances the user’s sensory experience. This adaptability allows brands to craft façades that are both materially luxurious and technically robust.
Terracotta Façade Detail: From Concept to Execution
When specifying terracotta cladding detail, key considerations include:
-
Module coordination with window openings and vertical coursing
-
Substructure and anchorage—ensuring the terracotta facade system withstands wind loads, movement, and tolerances
-
Edges and returns—special profiles preserve continuity across corners
-
Maintenance—glazed ceramic wall cladding tiles offer low porosity and durability
Such rigor ensures that the façade not only conveys luxury but also meets performance expectations for terracotta in construction projects worldwide.
